Are there really “new” containers in the U.S.?

Not exactly.
All steel shipping containers are manufactured overseas—primarily in China—and must make at least one ocean trip to get to the U.S. Even if a container is labeled “new” or “one-trip,” it has been used once to carry cargo across the ocean.

So when you see a “new container,” it’s actually what we call a one-trip unit—clean, in excellent condition, and about as close to brand-new as you can get in the U.S. market. We’ll always be upfront with you about what you’re buying.

What’s the difference between container conditions? (“one-trip,” and “used”)

  • One-Trip (Like New): Used once to ship cargo to the U.S. Clean, no rust, ready for custom projects or professional settings
  • Used / Wind & Water-Tight (WWT): Older but still in solid shape. Guaranteed to keep contents dry and secure

We inspect each container before we deliver and help you choose what’s right for your budget and purpose.

How is the container delivered?

We use a tilt-bed trailer to slide the container off at your site. You’ll need:

  • A firm, level surface (dirt, gravel, concrete)
  • Enough space (100 ft of straight line for 40 ft or 70 ft of straight line for 20 ft)
  • No low wires, large branches, or very steep slopes

We work with you to make sure it’s placed safely and exactly where you want it.

Will you level the container upon delivery?

We do not guarantee a perfectly level container, but our drivers are happy to assist with placing one block under each corner, as long as the customer provides the blocks at the time of delivery. While exact leveling isn’t guaranteed due to site conditions, our team typically spends about an hour onsite to help ensure proper placement and a smooth setup.

For best results, we recommend having a flat, firm surface prepared before delivery.

What can you use a container for?

When you own your container, you get peace of mind, control, and flexibility—no rent, no ongoing fees, no waiting around for access. Customers use their containers for:

  • Emergency prep – Secure storage for fuel, gear, and supplies
  • Construction sites – Lock up tools and materials on-site
  • Farms – Store tractors, feed, seed, or fencing materials
  • Homesteads – Build a secure workshop or storage barn
  • Small businesses – Add overflow inventory or warehouse space
  • Mobile or modular builds – Offices, break rooms, cabins, or shelters

How long does a container last?

A well-maintained steel container can last 30–40 years or more from its original manufacture date—especially when kept off direct ground contact and repainted as needed to prevent rust. These units are built to handle ocean freight—they’re tough. Our used wind and water tight containers are typically retired from active freight use but still have 15+ years of functional life remaining for storage or other applications.

Jack was super attentive and helpful. He delivered our two 20’ containers quickly and took the extra time and effort to see to it that they were placed exactly where we wanted them. Plus, these containers are in incredible condition—just like they were new. We’d recommend Jack and Central Virginia Containers to anyone looking for a shipping container.
